1985 Yamaha XJ700 Maxim

Wow. Haven’t kept up on this site much lately. The bike business has been slowing down lately due to an alternate full time job and graduate school, but I still do what I can.

Toured to the east coast on this XJ700 then sold it shortly after. Great little bike. I had it running like brand new.

  7. Hi, I just bought an 85 maxim xj 700, I don’t have a manual for it. It runs great but it does have some cosmetic damage.. I.e. missing the tach, the speedo cover and other minor things. I’m in the military and stationed in ft campbell, ky. Any idea where I can get parts for this bike? Every place I go here, they say they can’t help me….thanks in advance!

  14. Any idea on what the ignition coil specifications are on an xj700x? Ive searched most forums and cant find anything. I’d like to know how to test this with a multimeter (which poles/settings). Also, cant find any ‘new’ replacement coils that are a clear match. Any help will be great! Thanks!

  15. Hi evan,

I’ve had my ’85 xj700n for over eight years now and have had the same problem since I bought it. The guy I purchased it from decided to winterize it that year, that was fun to clean up. Afterwards, it ran great at speed and high rpm, but the low end was sluggish, especially off the line. My plugs foul up every ride and require cleaning before the next. Realized it was running rich so I took the air cleaner out and it seemed to help the performance, but my plugs and exhaust pipes still sooty. Took the carbs off…again…checked the floats and levels…again…As well as the gas levels…All good. It’s obviously getting too much gas. I’m positive it’s not the float needles…pretty sure it’s the needle and jet assemblies toward the top of the carburetor and I think a second needle jet directly below it according to the original service manual. I’ve looked for parts, can’t find ’em. I’ve found the main jets I guess they’re called, but I need the whole assembly….any ideas where to find four of each? I’ve been told they’re discontinued and should hope someone in like Fargo, ND might have some in his barn. 🙂 Let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks.

  17. 6 years ago since you posted the link for this service manual, and it is still helping people out there. Recently acquired an 85 XJ700 for free (not in bad shape), and will start rebuilding it. Your manual will be very helpful. Thank you.

  22. When you were that bushy haired, broke GU grad, and I had hair down to my waist, we thought we’d be old at 60. We’re not! and isn’t that Grand? We’re Happy, Healthy, Grateful for a full life. Won the lottery in many ways. Being a grandparent is a profound experience and I realize that ACE and Keegan are pieces of my imortality. Happy Birthday, my dear, old friend. May you and Marek and all subsequent grandchildren enjoy every minute of every day.
